Che Guevara (full name: Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna) was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, medical student, and author who played a key role in the Cuban Revolution. Born on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina, Guevara became interested in politics at an early age and traveled extensively throughout Latin America, observing and documenting the struggles of the working poor.
In the mid-1950s, Guevara met Fidel Castro, and together they organized the successful overthrow of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Guevara served as a high-ranking official in the Castro government and played a major role in Cuba's relations with other socialist and communist countries around the world.
Guevara was a prolific writer and author of several books, including "The Motorcycle Diaries," which chronicled his travels throughout Latin America, and "Guerrilla Warfare," which outlined his philosophy of revolutionary warfare. He also became an iconic figure in popular culture, with his image appearing on everything from T-shirts to posters to graffiti.
Guevara's revolutionary activities extended beyond Cuba, and he became involved in movements in other countries throughout the 1960s. In 1967, he was captured and executed by Bolivian government forces while trying to establish a revolutionary regime in that country. He continues to be a controversial figure, both celebrated by those who see him as a champion of the oppressed and reviled by others who view him as a dangerous and violent revolutionary.
